Traditional Kintsugi Foundation Course
Kintsugi is the Japanese practice of repairing broken ceramics with lacquer and metal powder, leaving the repair visible rather than hiding it. This four session course teaches the traditional method using real urushi lacquer, with no synthetic adhesive at any stage.
You bring one small broken piece and take it from fragments to a finished repair over four weeks. The waiting between sessions is part of the process: urushi cures rather than dries, and each stage has to harden before the next can go on.
Taught by Sayako Hiroi, a Japanese artist with an MFA from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts at Tufts.
Classes are capped at four people.
Beginners welcome, no experience needed. Ages 18+.
Thursdays 1–3pm, September 17, 24, October 1 and 8
$425 for all four sessions, materials and tools included
