Author Sally Pemberton recounts the gripping narratives of the first wave of modern artists to arise during WWII, such as attempting to bring humanity to a Japanese internment camp, painting U.S. Navy submarines in action, depicting acts of enemy torture, joining the French "Résistance," and helping fellow artists flee the Nazis. Pemberton became fascinated by artists’ involvement in, and response to, the war while writing her award-winning book, "Portrait of Murdock Pemberton: The New Yorker’s First Art Critic." During this lecture, Pemberton will chronicle the visual reporting of bravery and suffering during this consequential chapter in world history.

Sally Pemberton holds a bachelor’s degree in international relations and French. She worked for over a decade in international banking with BNP Paribas before following her artistic calling, returning to the US to study at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. In Chicago, she worked in the design field as a marketing strategist and started a design education program for inner city youth. More recently, Pemberton became an accidental archivist and art historian in 2009 after discovering several suitcases containing memorabilia belonging to her grandfather, "The New Yorker’s" first art critic. She has since been researching the lives of the artists and dealers who were at the forefront of the modern art movement in America and weaving together their stories.

Registration begins January 25 at 9 am.

The Athenæum's five galleried floors overlook the peaceful Granary Burying Ground, and, as Gamaliel Bradford wrote in 1931, "it is safe to say that [no library] anywhere has more an atmosphere of its own, that none is more conducive to intellectual aspiration and spiritual peace." The building was designated as a National Historic Landmark in 1966.
