Our upcoming art event will be held on Saturday, February 17 with Hingham artist Margaret McWethy. Margaret will talk about her style and approach to painting in oils. She will perform a painting demonstration in oils for public from 1 to 3pm. Public is encouraged to stop by any time, watch her paint, ask questions, listen, talk, and view the display of her paintings on the Gallery Artist Wall. Margaret is one of the Twelve Gallery Artists who get featured for a month throughout the year. Don’t hesitate to stop by, light refreshments will be served.
The month of February 2018 features paintings by Margaret McWethy. Margaret McWethy is an Impressionist painter with a lifelong interest in art and the natural world. She paints the scenes that surround her, but her real subjects are the brilliance of light and the rhythms of nature.
Margaret studied art history and biology at Swarthmore College. Since graduating she has sought teachers who base their art on training, careful observation, and understanding. Master colorist, Henry Hensche and nationally known portrait artist Cedric Egeli, have been influential teachers who have helped Margaret learn the skills and discipline needed to express her personal view of nature. The pursuit of knowledge to enhance her "seeing" of the world has become an ongoing journey for Margaret. Margaret's background in the sciences tends to make her approach a blend of the analytical and intuitive. "I like the idea of reducing things to parts to see how they work, then reconstructing and editing. Not with the object of reducing things to formulas but to reach some real understanding with which one can then begin to create. I always like exploring the small landscape of the still life. I enjoy the intimacy of the relationships."
Margaret teaches painting the Impressionist still life and landscape locally. She has won numerous awards and is a charter member of the New England Plein Air Painters. Her work hangs in private collections in the United States, Canada and Europe.
