REMARKS BY JOHN YAU at 4pm
LaiSun Keane presents Five Visions of the World, an exhibition curated by poet and writer John Yau, marking his third curatorial collaboration with the gallery. The exhibition features Nidhi Agarwal, Xingzi Gu, Eunha Kim, Nanako Kono, and Maisie Luo whose practices span continents, materials, and visual traditions.
In keeping with the gallery’s ethos of championing emerging artists, John Yau curated this exhibition featuring works that left a lasting impression on him, pieces he encountered in artist studios, residencies, and through his teaching at Rutgers University. An accompanying essay by Yau delves deeper into the ideas and connections that shaped the exhibition.
Nidhi Agarwal, Indian-born and based, holds a BFA from the College of Art, India. Using embroidery and watercolor, she creates scenes of divine figures and abstract geometries inspired by the Hindu festival of Holi.
Xingzi Gu, born in Nantong, China, lives and works in New York. They received a BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 2018 and an MFA from New York University in 2023. Gu’s work portrays androgynous adolescents on the threshold of adulthood, combining calligraphic gesture with translucent fields of color.
Eunha Kim, Korean-born, holds a BFA from the California College of the Arts and an MFA from Hunter College. Her paintings and ceramics merge Korean Minhwa motifs with inquiries into language, memory, and displacement.
Nanako Kono, originally from Japan, earned a BFA from the University of Nevada and an MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Working across painting and sculpture, she draws from Shinto beliefs in the spirit of objects to examine the gaps between languages and meanings.
Maisie Luo earned her MFA from Mason Gross School of the Arts, Rutgers University. Drawing from Chinese folk-art traditions and Buddhist mandalas, her work explores social systems and modes of production.
We are honored to collaborate once again with curator John Yau in presenting an exhibition that highlights a dynamic group of emerging women artists of Asian descent in Boston. An Opening Reception with Curator Remarks will be held on November 15, from 3:00 to 5:00 PM.
