Discover a Hidden Treasure: The Richard and Ann Port African Art Collection

The Malden Historical Society Malden Public Library invites you to the opening reception of a truly remarkable exhibition — one that has been privately held and unseen by the public for over 50 years.

The Richard and Ann Port African Art Collection celebrates a extraordinary chapter in Peace Corps history. As the 65th anniversary of the Peace Corps approaches, we honor Richard and Ann as true pioneers: the first married couple ever to serve overseas together with the organization, part of the very first volunteer group deployed to Ghana in 1961. During their service, the Ports assembled a stunning collection of more than 150 pieces of African art, including intricate carvings, vibrant textiles, and traditional instruments.

A Rare Highlight: Among the collection's treasures are four carved works by Lamidi Olonade Fakeye, one of Nigeria's most celebrated sculptors. A fifth-generation Yoruba wood carver, Fakeye (1928–2009) trained under master carver George Bamidele Arowoogun and went on to a career spanning decades, including years as an artist-in-residence and lecturer in both Nigeria and the United States. In 2008, he was honored as a UNESCO Living Human Treasure in recognition of his mastery and lifelong contribution to traditional Yoruba art. His work is held in major collections, including the Smithsonian Institution and the Indianapolis Museum of Art — and now, visitors to Malden can see it firsthand.
