Virtuoso guitarist Aaron Larget-Caplan returns to Boston on Saturday, December 3rd for an exhilarating concert celebrating his most recent CD release, ‘The Legend of Hagoromo’ (Stone Records UK) and the music of J.S. Bach, Modest Mussorgsky and John Cage. Larget-Caplan takes audiences on a musical journey of colors, cultures and revolutions, interspersed with stories about the music and composers.

The concert is at Arlington Street Church, 351 Boylston Street, Boston. Tickets are $20 at the door, with students with a valid ID $16.85.

An international touring artist from Colorado now based in Boston on faculty at the University of Massachusetts Boston, Larget-Caplan recently returned from performing again in Russia, Germany and Italy. His performances have been hailed as “stunning” by Fanfare Magazine, and the Boston Musical Intelligencer noted his astounding
technical proficiency and artistic delicacy”. The Polish publication Six Strings of the World says: "To write that [Larget-Caplan] has something to boast about would be to say too little, the guitarist is not afraid of any tempo.”

The fist American and first guitarist featured on the expanding classical label Stone Records. “The CD is a highlight of our over 80 releases”, says founder Mark Stone, who recently made his debut with the BSO singing Thomas Adès.

Larget-Caplan’s latest CD, ‘The Legend of Hagoromo,’ is a musical fusion built on a Japanese theme with American composers writing in an Eastern aesthetic and Japanese composers writing in a Western. It includes works by George Gershwin and Harold Arlen, as well as New Lullabies commissioned by Larget-Caplan for his New Lullaby Project. It’s been hailed “an eclectic and endlessly rewarding release” by Classical Guitar. New arrangements of J.S. Bach and John Cage keyboard works compliment the program, as well as a fascinating arrangement by Japanese virtuoso Yamashita of two movements of the famed ‘Pictures in an Exhibition,’ by Modest Mussorgsky, and an audience favorite, the Japanese tour-de-force, ‘Legend of Hagoromo.’

Keigo Fujii’s “Legend of Hagoromo” is based on a Japanese legend about a fisherman who falls in love with a heavenly maiden who can fly when she wears her feathered kimono (Hagoromo). He steals it, and drama ensues. The music is Eastern in a mode from Okinawa, Japan, but the composer, studied in the West and loved rock guitar. The guitarist uses unusual techniques, including brushing, bending, scratching to highlight the piece’s intense rhythmic shaping and dramatic story. The American Record Guide described Aaron’s performance of the 20-minute masterpiece as “an emotional and technical tour de force”.
