Carolyn Webb’s exhibition, Forest, features a thicket of tall totem-like sculptures carved from wood. Like trees bending in the wind, the undulating forms encourage viewers to gaze upwards and wend their way into the dialogue of their soaring upright stance.
Webb explains that she “wanted to create a sense of lively, energetic conversation between these muscular carved pieces, emphasizing verticality and upward motion. The compressed space of the LaunchPad Gallery seemed a perfect venue in which to make this happen. Several of these works were formerly beloved backyard trees given to me by friends for carving. These sculptures are intended to celebrate the energy and tension held by trees in their upright denial of gravity.”
Carolyn Webb’s work has been exhibited widely and is held in private, public, and corporate collections including the Hyde Collection, the New York Public Library, and Meditech Corporation. She is the recipient of many awards including a recent Resident Fellowship at the Scuola Internazionale di Grafica, Venice, an A.R.T. Grant, a Purchase Award from the Fellowship of the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art, a Massachusetts Artist Foundation Fellowship in Sculpture, an Artist Residency Grant from the Vermont Studio Center, and a Ford Foundation Award. Her studies at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art included a Postgraduate fellowship in sculpture as well as a Scheidt Traveling scholarship. She holds an MFA in sculpture from the University of Massachusetts and is a member of the Boston Printmakers and ZeaMays Printmakers. Webb lives and maintains her studio in Williamsburg, Massachusetts.
