JENNY HERZOG/JIM GUTTMANN DUO

Jenny Herzog is a classically trained, jazz-loving tap dancer, vocalist, and improvisational musician based in Boston. She grew up on the Great American Songbook, musical theater, Thelonious Monk, and the Nicholas Brothers. Her belief is that the voice and body are intertwined; voice informs body informs voice. Improvisation is an essential ingredient to who she is and what she does. She received a Masters degree in Contemporary Improvisation at the New England Conservatory where she sang and tapped her way through genres, structures, and ideas. She also has extensive knowledge of Yiddish Theater music and klezmer tunes. She is presently the founder and executive director of Moving Stories, an organization that partners with local organizations to create live, full-length performances integrating storytelling, music, and dance. To sum it up, Ms. Herzog is truly an eclectically adventurous artist and her vibrant personality and her sheer originality has delighted audiences especially those seeing her for the first time.

From smoky dives to Carnegie Hall, Jim Guttmann’s career spans 40 years and many musical idioms. As a founding member of the Klezmer Conservatory Band, he has toured the world and has performed & recorded with Itzhak Perlman and Joel Grey. He has worked with Eartha Kitt, Mark Murphy, western swing legend Tiny Moore, blues masters Johnny Shines and James Cotton, the new acoustic music stars Matt Glaser and Russ Barenberg, Jaki Byard’s Apollo Stompers and the Artie Shaw Band.

He spent many years with Benjamin Zander and the Boston Philharmonic Orchestra and in 1999, with the young Peter Evans, premiered Gunther Schuller’s “Fantastical Colloquy,” a duet for trumpet & contrabass. Along with Richard Stolzman and Dan Stepner he was part of the Grammy Award winning ensemble on Yehudi Wyner’s “The Mirror.”

In 2010 he released his first album as a leader, “Bessarabian Breakdown” a culmination of his experience to date, playing traditional klezmer music with small and large ensembles, and creating fusions of klezmer with traditional Afro-Cuban guajira and guaguanco, a nod to Tower of Power and calypso, a swinging jazz trio and a brief hip hop interlude.
