ASL Night

The evening highlights and features the art, language, and culture of the community. Coinciding with Deaf Awareness Month, the program includes American Sign Language tours and spotlight talks, performances, art-making activities, and more.

Presented in partnership with DEAF, Inc, Boston Children’s Hospital Deaf and Hard of Hearing Program, and Massachusetts State Association of the Deaf (MSAD).

All of the evening’s special events, talks, and tours are in ASL led by Deaf tour guides, artists, and performers and are translated into spoken English.

Each tour visits at least two major collections. Led by guides Sabrina Dennison, Leon Jerfita, Patrick McCarthy, Dan Peters, and Steve Weiner.

-- Art Making: Mirror Mosaics
5–8 pm, Education Center in the Druker Family Pavilion, Room 160
In Gallery 175, look at Pentagon by Monir Farmanfarmaian. Then head to Room 160 to make your own 3-D geometric mirror mosaic with artist and educator Miia Zellner. For all ages.
Supported by Boston Children’s Hospital Deaf and Hard of Hearing Program.

6–9:30 pm, Education Center in the Druker Family Pavilion, Room 159
Drop in to view works of art by local artist Takiyah Harris. From 8:15 pm on, the artist shares her stories, answers questions, and demonstrates how she creates her art.

-- The City Signs: Expression, Art, and Deaf Culture
7–8 pm, Remis Auditorium
Join Boston-area thinkers, activists, artists, and educators for a discussion and Q and A inspired by the MFA’s annual celebration of Deaf culture. Moderated by Stephanie Clark. Panelists include Shana Gibbs, Takiyah Harris, and Elbert Joseph.
Panel is ASL and will be voice interpreted. This event has CART.
Free ticket required. Tickets available at Remis Auditorium Box Office starting 60 minutes before show times.

-- Artist Toolbox Cart: Marble Sculpture
6:30–8:30 pm, Gallery 233
Discover techniques and handle the tools artists use; view demonstration pieces in the galleries and talk with knowledgeable staff.

-- Assistive Listening Devices (ALD)
An assistive listening system is available for gallery tours and talks from the Sharf Visitor Center. Headsets and neckloops are available. For visitors with hearing aids with a T-coil switch, there are induction loops at all entrances, the Box Office, and the Information desk at the Sharf Visitor Center.

-- Mobile MFA Guide
The mobile MFA Guide is a touch screen device available free for Deaf and hard of hearing visitors. It provides a self-guided approach to touring the galleries and includes ASL videos, text transcripts, and captioned videos. Neckloops and headsets both available. MFA Guides are available at any ticket desk and Sharf Visitor Center.
The Mobile MFA Guide is free to visitors who are blind, low vision, Deaf or hard of hearing. Nonmembers $6; Members $5; kids 17 and under $4.
