Massport is attempting to break the Guinness World Record for the world’s largest soccer ball — a 45-foot installation on the East Boston waterfront visible from multiple points along Boston Harbor. The current record of 38 feet, 11.8 inches has stood since 2013, when it was set in Doha, Qatar.
The soccer ball will be on public display at Piers Park II from June 12–18. On Saturday, June 13 from noon to 4 p.m., Massport will host a free Community Day at the park featuring family activities, games, and entertainment.
The record attempt is timed to the FIFA World Cup matches being held at Boston Stadium in Foxborough this June and July, with the installation serving as a landmark celebration of the city’s role as a host destination. The weeklong display gives residents and visitors from across the region the chance to experience the spectacle while exploring East Boston’s waterfront and skyline views.
The showcase is presented by Massport in partnership with HNTB.
