Savor the fusion of wine, food, heritage, and traditions when the Museum of African American History hosts a free book talk event featuring celebrated sommelier Cha McCoy and cookbook editor Layla Schlack who will discuss their groundbreaking new book, WINE PAIRING FOR THE PEOPLE: The Communion of Wine, Food, and Culture from Africa and Beyond (Harvest) on Saturday, November 22, 2025, from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm at 46 Joy St on the Museum’s Beacon Hill campus.

 

The conversation will be moderated by Tamika R. Francis of Food & Folklore, a project that pays homage to indigenous food, farm traditions, and food producers. McCoy—Wine Enthusiast’s 2019 40 Under 40 tastemaker—will bridge culture and cuisine through wine, sharing culinary traditions and insights from her journey across continents. Guests will have the opportunity to meet McCoy and Schlack, and autographed copies of their book will be available for purchase.


Part practical guide, part travelogue loved by chefs and home cooks alike, WINE PAIRING FOR THE PEOPLE is a first-of-its-kind exploration of the world of wine, challenging conventional wisdom by pairing wines with the rich, diverse cuisines of Africa, the Caribbean, Latin America, the United States, and Asia.


Traditionally, the wine world has favored the adage “what grows together, goes together,” often focusing on European cuisines and overlooking the vibrant flavors of regions where wine grapes aren’t cultivated. McCoy and Schlack’s guide dives deep by continent, region, and country, presenting new possibilities for pairing wines with flavorful dishes from across the globe.

The program is free and open to the public, but registration is required.
