Sonic Liberation Players - Season #3 (2018-2019)
“Why Patterns?”
Sonic Liberation Players present the final concert of their third season.
The first half of the concert is Feldman’s iconic half-hour piece “Why Patterns?” for flute(s), glockenspiel, and piano. Inspired by his interest in the patterns found in rugs, he treats the three instruments as individual colors, each written very precisely, but with a degree of imprecision that occurs when they are presented simultaneously. The result is an always-undulating texture in which the ear is drawn back and forth between the individual lines and the resultant weave.
The second half of the concert are pieces by four more composers who entered SLP’s Call for Scores in the summer of 2017. Two pieces about women’s ongoing struggle for freedom and equality – “Die Elbe” (Silvia Rosani), about a woman in a traditional Hungarian family struggling to find her voice, and ”Flay” (Cecilia Livingston), about a woman in ancient Greece who was murdered by a mob due to her intelligence and political influence – are particularly relevant in the light of the #metoo movement. We will also be performing Boston composer Tianyi Wang’s haunting piano trio “Dark Blessing” and New York composer Gilbert Galindo’s spacious piano quartet “Echoes of the Divine”.
The Sonic Liberation Players explore new ways of encountering sound.
To offer this experience to a broad range of listeners we play uncommonly heard works and commission new pieces that investigate the area between “academic/intellectual” and “pop influenced” classical music.
The core members of SLP met and performed together at California Institute of the Arts in the early 2Ks. A decade later, having migrated independently to the East Coast (Boston and New York), they reconnected and began this new musical journey together, launching as SLP in 2016. The CalArts “sound” is varied, yet finds roots in the music of John Cage and Morton Feldman. Likewise, the Sonic Liberation Players approach a prismatic variety of composers and music in search of new languages and adventurous musical possibilities.
