A musical event for the whole family! The ESOL Choir of the Back Bay Chorale joins historic fiddler player, Larry Young, for an interactive concert of sea shanties. The audience will hear stories, learn some shanties, and sing along in this fun collaboration perfect for the whole family.

To attend, please register on this Eventbrite page.

The English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) Choir is a collaboration of the Back Bay Chorale as part of its Bridges community engagement initiative and the Boston Public Library's ESOL classes. It aims to provide an opportunity to make vocal music, improve English language skills, and develop friendships with fellow community members—singers from Back Bay Chorale.

The Back Bay Chorale is a 120-member auditioned chorus, drawing talented singers from the greater Boston area to perform a repertoire that ranges from the Renaissance to the contemporary. Through its annual concert series, innovative programming, and Bridges community engagement program, the Bach Bay Chorale is now regarded as one of Boston’s premier nonprofessional choruses.

Larry Young (aka Tobias Tripp) graduated from Dartmouth College where he majored in music and studied violin with Andrew Jennings and music history with Charles Hamm. He studied violin pedagogy at Longy School of Music with Wolfgang Schocken and improvisation at the Berklee School of Music. Performing on violin, viola, cittern and voice, Mr. Young takes great delight in bringing the past alive with his costumed performances of music from the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries. He is also an accomplished lecturer who uses intriguing and humorous facts and anecdotes to provide a unique experience he calls “historical edu-tainment.” In addition to playing for corporate and private functions on land and at sea, weddings, funerals, and holiday events, he has performed for numerous schools and universities, museums and historical societies from Boston to San Francisco, on national public television and on live classical radio. Some of his recent performances have been at Boston’s Old State House, Old South Meeting House, the Worcester Art Museum, Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, The Peabody Essex Museum, Faneuil Hall, Old Deerfield, Mystic Seaport, The New Bedford Whaling Museum, and the San Francisco National Maritime Park. He is also a certified teacher of the F.M. Alexander Technique and enjoys yoga and period fencing.
