About This Event

Introduction

Hear from Dan Pallotta, charity activist and founder and President of the Charity Defense Council as he discusses nonprofits, the media, and how his new venture is aiming to change the way the public thinks about charity.

Why It Matters?

High-profile accusations of "lavish spending" (from CBS News and the New York Times) devastated Wounded Warrior Project in 2016, with nearly 100 employees fired, 9 offices closed, and up to $200 million in donations lost. But, one year later, three separate follow-up investigations have exonerated the charity. Turns out, there was no mismanagement after all; the stories got it wrong.

So then who's to blame for the tainted reputation? the loss of donations? the harm to the charity's mission?

According to Dan, our culture's attitudes about charity are dead wrong and thought leaders know it. But, the sector has done a poor job standing up for itself, challenging misconceptions about charity, and educating the public about the value of talent, infrastructure, and fundraising.

Takeaways
- How our fundamental attitudes about charity are flawed
- How the media reinforces counterproductive ideas about charity
- Why it's time for the charity sector to stand up for itself and start confronting counterproductive thinking
- What the Charity Defense Council is doing to change the way people think about changing the world
