Somerville's Deborah Mason's Cambridge Youth Dance Company and a roster of stellar guest artists (and some surprise appearances!) bring their acclaimed production of What the Dickens! to John Hancock Hall for eight performances, Dec. 14 – 23, 2018.
Weaving contemporary dance, ballet, tap, hip hop, flamenco, projections, narration and more, ‘What The Dickens!’ is an enchanting dance-theater rendition of Dickens’ classic, timely story of transforming greed into kindness and joy. Produced by local legend Deborah Mason and directed by Leslie Woodies (Broadway veteran and Boston Ballet alum), 'What The Dickens!' bursts with “positive themes of humanity, love, inclusion, and hope that will make your heart soar.” Mason says, “That's our message. This is our gift to Boston."
'WHAT THE DICKENS! ' features Boston Ballet alum Clyde Nantais as Ebenezer Scrooge and an amazing roster of guest artists includes Papa Sy/Present Ghost, Yosi Karahashi/Future Ghost, Jenny Oliver/Mrs. Cratchit, Ryan P. Casey/Mr. Cratchit, Ruka Hatua-Saar White (Marley), Stella Jacob (Past Ghost), Phunk Phenomenon with select narration by Boston Herald Sports writer Steve Buckley. The original choreography and concept by David Drummond. Over the years other choreographic contributors include Ian Berg, Ryan P. Casey, Reia Briggs Connor, Adrienne Hawkins, Khalid Hill, Deborah Mason, Rocky Mendes, Jenny Oliver, Jeryl Palana Pilapil, and Leslie Woodies.
The creative design team includes set designer Peter Watson, lighting designer Anne Dresbach, costume designers Sue Gabriel and Nancy Lawrence, sound designer Chris Mehl and scenic illustrations by the youth from Artists for Humanity and construction by Richard Wood, Wooden Kiwi.
