Tony Award-winning COMPANY is a 1970 musical comedy and concept musical with music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim (Tony Award for Best Musical, Best Score, and Best Lyrics for COMPANY) and book by George Furth (who also collaborated with Sondheim on MERRILY WE ROLL ALONG).
Company features Robert (Jason Dick), a thirty-five year old bachelor in New York City, who seems to have everything but a partner, despite his friends’ ongoing encouragements. Robert claims that he has all that he needs with this so-called “Company,” yet, over the course of a year, we watch Robert interact with the competitive Sarah (Linnea Carlyss Lyerly) and Harry (Brian Higgins), the “picture perfect” Susan (Greta DiGiorgio) and Peter (Doug Gerber), the conservative parents Jenny (Margaret Felice) and David (Ryan O’Reilly Goldberg), the engaged Amy (Cara Elizabeth Guappone) and Paul (Nicholas Mann), and the cynical Joanne (Cathy Merlo) and Larry (Steve Pinner). These vignettes showcase the highs and lows, and pros and cons of being married.
With ditzy flight attendant April (Gwen Coburn), NYC-loving Marta (Eliza Teele Dumais), and former girlfriend Kathy (Amanda Casale), Robert has plenty of prospective women in his life, but Robert learns what he wants and needs over the course of a year. Interspersed with award-winning script and poignant musical numbers, including “You Could Drive a Person Crazy,” “The Ladies Who Lunch,” “Being Alive,” and the titular “Company,” COMPANY will resonate with anyone that has ever been on the road to commitment.
