South of the Katahdin region and part of the Grand Lakes, Moosehead Lake is the largest lake in New England, encompassing about 75,000 acres in size. With most of the lake being owned by the state, the lake is well preserved and offers ample opportunities for outdoor recreation. The plan for this trip is to do two moderate hikes (Eagle Rock and Mount Kineo) with time to enjoy the lake outside of the hikes, including fishing, paddling, swimming and sightseeing. The plan for Saturday is to hike Eagle Rock. Eagle Rock is a cliff on the side of Little Moose Mountain that offers panoramic views including Katahdin and is arguably one of the best views in the area. The total hike is 6.5 miles and has minimal elevation gain of around 1,700 ft. On Sunday, we plan to hike Mount Kineo, a mountain in the middle of the lake, only accessible by ferry. Note: Information on the ferry schedule and price will be posted once the information is available. Only cash is accepted for the ferry. While not high in elevation, the summit offers incredible views, including Katahdin, Number 4, and Big/Little Moose Mountains and the surrounding peaks. The hike only has a 1,000 ft. of elevation gain with a distance of 5 miles. There’s a firetower on the summit that offers incredible views but views will be frequent on this hike.

Flakers need not sign up. Only sign up if you're interested in joining. Flaking on this trip or cancelling within 2 weeks of the trip date will result in forfeiture of campsite fees and the out-of-state gate passes. Standard Ridj-it policies apply for cancellations regarding carpooling. Constantly flaking or cancelling may affect your ability to join future trips organized by me. Due to a limit on the amount of cars at the campsite and group sizes, there will not be any non-carpoolers for this trip. If you're not from the Boston area, feel free to contact me and we can meet at a Park & Ride along the way. I will not be able to add more spots for this trip.
