Anna, a Jewish security guard in a remote private compound, screens applicants desperate to live there. The community spirals into fear when a beloved compound dog suddenly goes missing. Neighbors accuse neighbors of the crime. Anna's daughter Iris goes into hiding, afraid her evil eye is responsible for the dog's disappearance. In this gripping morality tale, replete with Yiddish songs and dark humor, Sinelnikova creates a spiraling gyre of mystery. Sinelnikova, a Ukrainian Jewish émigré to Germany at age 7, wrote the film for her graduate thesis at Babelsberg Film University in Berlin.
Followed by a conversation with Writer/Director Natalia Sinelnikova via Zoom.
Shortlisted for Germany's Oscars submission for Best International Feature Film.
