Join us for a conversation celebrating the opening of "My Mechanical Sketchbook" — Barkley L. Hendricks & Photography, on view at the Rose Art Museum February 10–July 24, 2022.
Exhibition co-curators Dr. Gannit Ankori (Henry and Lois Foster Director and Chief Curator of the Rose) and Dr. Elyan J. Hill (Guest Curator of African and African Diaspora Art) will converse with Rose collection artist James (Ari) Montford, a close friend of the late Barkley Hendricks. Weaving personal insights and anecdotes alongside curatorial research, the hour-long Zoom program will offer new perspectives about this Rose exhibition.
This conversation will be hosted online via Zoom.
This event will have automated closed captions through Zoom. The Rose is committed to making its virtual programs accessible to all. Please email inquiries and requests to Elizabeth Moy, Programs Coordinator, if anything else would make your participation easier.
ABOUT THE EXHIBITION
"My Mechanical Sketchbook" — Barkley L. Hendricks & Photography focuses on the significant and multifaceted role of the camera and the photographic image within Barkley L. Hendricks's artistic practice. The show presents Hendricks's photographs as autonomous artworks; models for oil paintings; and as "mechanical sketchbooks"—to cite the artist's own words—that helped Hendricks capture and recall sights and insights. The exhibition illuminates the deep connections between Hendricks's myriad forms of creative expression with photographs, Polaroids, paintings, and works on paper.
