WHAT IS A TUNA?
A University Tuna is a traditional musical group that wears a combination of traditional old costumes and plays instruments such as guitar, bandolas (small pear-shape chordophones), mandolins, violin, castanets, cajón (is a box-shaped percussion instrument ), bass and the tambourine which is the characteristic instrument of this music.
The Tuna of the University of America in Bogotá, Colombia, was founded in 1991, by a group of students from various faculties of the Institution under the direction of Mr. Camilo Reyes.
During these years, the Tuna has had the opportunity to sing innumerable and traditional serenades but also has been able to participate in different universities festivals, talents shows and fairs.
This Tuna has recorded three musical productions as follows:
• “Dream and Joy” (“Ensueño y Alegría”) - 2001
• “We will meet again” (“Volveremos a Encontrarnos” )- 2011
• “Concert DVD 25 years” (DVD concierto 25 años)- 2016
University of America’s Tuna was the winner of the XIV International Tuna Festival of Duitama where 32 Tunas that included internationals performers from Peru, Chile and Mexico. It also obtained the awards for Best Male Soloist and Best Cloak Show.
