On September 3rd, Catalyst Conversations, in partnership with the inaugural Boston Public Art Triennial, invites the public to experience Transformative Invasions —a one-night conversation and reception exploring how invasions, both ecological and cultural, shape our world.
The program centers on the work of Adela Goldbard, Mexico City artist and scholar, who is installing a large-scale ship on Boston City Hall Plaza built from invasive reeds collected across the Americas. The ship, a striking symbol of colonialism, will be destroyed in a live public performance on September 12.
Before its fiery conclusion, Goldbard will join Harvard ecologists Michael LaScaleia and Charles Davis on Wednesday, September 3rd to unpack how invasions (whether biological, cultural, or political) upend environments and societies. Artist and educator Jill Slosburg-Ackerman will moderate the discussion, focusing on how artistic and scientific approaches work to mitigate the effects of what harms our cultures.
Reception with the speakers at Democracy Brewing Beer Garden on City Hall Plaza with refreshments (cash bar).
