Learn to use the metal lathe for cutting threads.
Class Description
Prerequisite: Successful tool test on the metal lathe or equvilent experience; please email [email protected] if unsure if this class is for you.
This is a course for students who have already begun to use the metal lathe but want to delve specifically into its ability to cut threads. The threading function on the lathe is one of its most advanced features. Once you master it, you will be able to cut any size and shape thread in most materials.
The materials fee for this class is $10. This is separate from the ticket price and is to reimburse the instructor for any tools or materials used in this class. This will be paid once, directly to the instructor at the start of the first class meeting. This instructor accepts Venmo.
Learning Objectives
- Identify the different kinds of threads.
- Know the names of thread parameters and how to measure them.
- Know when to use the lathe to thread vs. using taps and dies.
- Select tooling for cutting threads on the lathe.
- Set up and operate the lathe to cut threads.
Instructor - Max Eskin
Max is an Artisans Asylum veteran, who has dabbled in most of the skills practiced at the Asylum, but focusing on machining and metalworking techniques.
Target Audience
Students with limited experince on the metal lathe or curious about A2's Machine Shop. All students must be 18 years old or older.
Your Ticket Includes
- A piece of material and a threading tool will be provided for each student.
- Access to A2's Machine Shop and tools for the duration of the session.
Class Policies
Attire: Come dressed to use the lathe (closed-toe shoes, any loose hair or clothing tied back, safety goggles).
