This Changes Everything: How newsrooms are shifting strategies to better serve communities

According to Poynter, more than 100 local newsrooms have closed during the coronavirus pandemic, highlighting already deeply troubling industry trends that have been playing out over the past two decades. Among the factors contributing to sharp declines in the news business are dramatically impacted revenue streams, technological advancements affecting how people access news and information, and a marked erosion of public trust toward media institutions.

However, the news about the news isn't completely bleak. A groundswell of community-focused media outlets are working to create new playbooks and pathways to sustainability, ensuring essential facts and information continue to reach the greater public.

WBUR chief content officer Victor Hernandez moderates a conversation with Charlie Sennott, CEO of GroundTruth Project and co-founder of Report for America, followed by a panel discussion exploring how local news ecosystems can evolve to be more relevant, responsive and relied upon by the communities they serve.
