The new season of Music for Viols and Friends begins on Friday, November 1, 2019 with a concert of 17th-century chamber music from the Netherlands performed by Duo Maresienne (Carol Lewis, viola da gamba; Olav Chris Henriksen, lutes and theorbo). The duo will play sonatas, suites and fantasies by Schenck, Fresnau, Schop, Vallet, Sweelinck and others. For further information, or to receive a series brochure, call (617) 776-0692 or go to www.duomaresienne.com
Amsterdam, with its below-sea-level waterways, has been called the “Venice of the North”, and it was certainly one of the centers for fine music-making in the Netherlands. Many top musicians had great careers there, and their music testifies to the high level of variety and quality in their production. Come hear variations on popular tunes by Sweelinck and Schop, as well as suites by Riehmann and Schenck, and a beautiful lute fantasia by Vallet.
Olav Chris Henriksen and Carol Lewis, frequently heard as soloists, have also performed and recorded with many ensembles in the United States and abroad, including Boston Camerata, Ensemble Chaconne, Emmanuel Music, Capella Clausura, Capriccio Stravagante, Hespèrion and others. They specialize in a range of music for bowed and plucked instruments from the 15th to the 18th centuries, and they also enjoy performing new music: in June 2017 they were among the performers appearing with countertenor Anthony Roth Costanzo in a concert at the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum featuring works of composer Nico Muhly.
