Join us Thursday, March 6 from 7pm-8pm for Jerry Craft, Lesley University’s 2025 Evelyn M. Finnegan ‘48 Lecturer. Jerry is a multi-award-winning author-illustrator of titles like New Kid and School Trip. This lecture is titled “Embracing My Own Boldness (In a world that demands that I be humble)” How does a reluctant reader who was told that Comics would rot his brain grow up to create the graphic novel that won the Newbery medal? Jerry Craft takes you on his journey. This lecture is a part of the The Thought Leadership Series.

Jerry Craft is the New York Times bestselling author and illustrator of the graphic novels New Kid, Class Act, and School Trip. New Kid is the only book in history to win the John Newbery Medal for the most outstanding contribution to children’s literature (2020); the Kirkus Prize for Young Readers’ Literature (2019), and the Coretta Scott King Author Award for the most outstanding work by an African American writer (2020). Jerry was born in Harlem and grew up in the Washington Heights section of New York City and now travels the world telling kids and their families about the importance of reading

Previous Finnegan lecturers have included award-winning authors and illustrators Jasmine Warga, Carole Lindstrom, Ekua Holmes, Candice Illoh, Tracey Baptiste, Jack Gantos, Joel Christian Gill, Steve Jenkins, Renee Kurilla, and E.B. Lewis & Susan Goodman.
The Evelyn M. Finnegan ’48 Lecture brings to the Lesley community renowned authors and artists recognized for excellence in the children’s literature genre. Mrs. Finnegan was a graduate of Lesley’s esteemed Early Childhood Education Program. She began her career teaching first grade, and after starting her own nursery school in her home, commenced writing the first of six popular children’s books.
In 2010, in recognition of a generous gift to the University from the Finnegan family, Lesley established this lecture series and named its children’s literature collection, one of the largest and finest in the country, the Evelyn M. Finnegan ‘48 Children’s Literature Collection.
