Pianist Carolyn Enger’s Mischlinge Exposé weaves a multimedia tapestry around a little-known aspect of the Holocaust: the Mischlinge, a derogatory Nazi term for "half-Jews." This many-layered presentation, which combines music, art, literature, and film, brings to light the stories of mischlinge and German-Jewish converts to Christianity before, during, and after the Holocaust. Woven richly into the tapestry are audio and video testimony by Carolyn's father and godmother, both classified by the Nazis as Grade A mischlinge, and music that is part of the context, which Carolyn brings alive on the piano. Among the piano pieces are music by Felix Mendelssohn, Arnold Schoenberg, and two other German-Jewish-born composers, music by two Israeli composers, and a specially commissioned piece by the acclaimed composer Bruce Adolphe. Congregation Shalom is sponsoring this concert to mark 80 years since Kristallnacht, the Night of Broken Glass. This wave of violence throughout Germany and its occupied land on November 9 and 10, 1938, deepened recognition throughout the Jewish community of the dangers of Nazi rule. A donation of $10 is suggested. Proceeds will benefit the organization Facing History and Ourselves, an educational program to engage students of diverse backgrounds in examination of racism, prejudice, and Anti-Semitism, to promote the development of a more humane and informed citizenry.
Since space is limited, reservations to Congregation Shalom are advised. For reservations, email [email protected] or call (978) 251-8091. As of November 1, there are still plenty of seats available. Doors open at 2:45 pm.
