The Makanda Project with special guest Salim Washington

The Makanda Project begins its annual summer concert series on the lawn of historic First Church in Roxbury. There will be live painting sponsored by MassArt's sparc! the ArtMobile, arts and crafts vendors, and good food.
Multi-instrumentalist Salim Washington will be special guest with the group. Mr. Washington lived in Boston during the 1980s and 1990s. His band the Roxbury Blues Aesthetic performed at Connolly’s in Roxbury every Saturday for many years, and in many ways was the precursor to the Makanda Project. After receiving his doctorate from Harvard University, he moved to New York and established himself on the scene there. For the past several years he has been living in Durban, South Africa, teaching at the University of KwaZulu Natal and performing with the country’s leading jazz musicians.
The musicians are Kurtis Rivers, Arni Cheatham, Salim Washington, Sean Berry, Charlie Kohlhase - saxophones; Jerry Sabatini, Phil Grenadier - trumpets; Ku-umba Frank Lacy, Sarah Politz, Bill Lowe - trombones; John Kordalewski - piano; John Lockwood - bass; and Warren Smith - drums
