The great multi-instrumentalist, educator, composer, and musical innovator Makanda Ken McIntyre would have been 90 years old on September 7, 2021, so the Makanda Project's September 11 concert at First Church in Roxbury will celebrate this event. The group will prepare a special program of Dr. McIntyre's compositions representing and illustrating a range of his favorite techniques and styles. Trombonist/pianist Richard Harper, a longtime colleague of Dr. McIntyre's and one of the people closest to him both musically and personally, will join the group and deliver remarks as well. Kurtis Rivers, Lee Odom, Sean Berry, Paavo Carey, Charlie Kohlhase (saxophones); Jerry Sabatini, Haneef Nelson (trumpets); Alfred Patterson (trombone); Richard Harper (trombone, piano); Bill Lowe (bass trombone); John Kordalewski (piano); John Lockwood (bass); Yoron Israel (drums).

The event will also include live painting sponsored by MassArt's sparc! the ArtMobile.
