Trombonist/vocalist/composer Ku-umba Frank Lacy frequently appears with the Makanda Project as one of the group's horn players. This concert will feature him: for much of the evening he will be directing the band through his own compositions and arrangements. In his illustrious career he has been musical director for Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers and a featured member of the Mingus Big Band, and recorded dozens of albums with a who's who of leading musicians. Kurtis Rivers, Armir Lee, Arni Cheatham, Paavo Carey, Charlie Kohlhase (saxophones); Jerry Sabatini, Haneef Nelson (trumpets); Ku-umba Frank Lacy, Bill Lowe, Tyler Bonilla (trombones); John Kordalewski (piano); John Lockwood (bass); Yoron Israel (drums).
