The Makanda Project at First Church in Roxbury

The Makanda Project’s third and final 2023 outdoor free concert at First Church in Roxbury will be on Saturday, September 9, 1:00 to 4:00 pm.

This will be the acclaimed Boston-area big band's annual September Makanda Ken McIntyre birthday celebration. The program will consist entirely of McIntyre compositions, including some of the group's more recent “discoveries” as they continue exploring his large body of unrecorded work, and continue becoming more deeply captivated by his brilliance as a composer.

This is a community event and a jazz concert rolled into one. There will be live painting sponsored by MassArt's sparc! the ArtMobile (in which all can participate), poetry readings, and performances by community youth.
