On October 9th, Korea celebrates one of the most remarkable achievements in linguistic history. This class tells the story of King Sejong the Great - the scholar-king who, in 1443, did something no ruler had done before: he created an entirely new writing system, designed specifically so that ordinary people could read and write. We will explore his extraordinary life, trace the history of the Korean language, and discover why linguists around the world consider Hangul one of the most logical and elegant alphabets ever devised. By the end of class, you will be able to read and write your very first Korean letters - and understand exactly why they look the way they do. No prior knowledge of Korean required.
