In recent years, immigration has been a recurring topic in the news. DACA. Travel bans. Child separation and border detention. By this point, it shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone that there are some extreme inequities and challenges with the U.S. immigration system that harm immigrants. In these stories, though, there’s never any mention of the unique experiences of immigrants with disabilities.
In this webinar, our presenters will discuss the various ways the U.S. immigration system impacts people with disabilities. The training is designed for folks who are relatively new to the subject and are looking to learn more about the intersection of immigration, immigrants, and disability.
About the Presenters
Katherine Perez hails from Los Angeles and is the proud granddaughter of Mexican immigrants. She identifies as a queer disabled Latina and was the first in her family to graduate from college. She holds a JD from the UCLA School of Law, is a member of the California Bar, and is currently a PhD Candidate in Disability Studies at the University of Illinois at Chicago. She was the co-founder of the National Coalition for Latinxs with Disabilities where she brought together disabled Latinxs from across the country and led initiatives in policy, research, community building and activism for four years.
Katherine is currently the inaugural Executive Director of The Coelho Center for Disability Law, Policy and Innovation. In 2019, she created The Coelho Center Law Fellowship Program, which is the first program of its kind to specifically train and mentor disabled individuals interested in attending law school. Katherine believes in creating a strong pipeline of law students with disabilities to go on and serve as attorneys, judges and politicians.
Roxana Moussavian learned about disability rights through her younger sister who is a disability rights advocate. She holds a J.D. from Yale Law School, where she was introduced to disability law through the Worker and Immigrant Rights Advocacy Clinic. Roxana joined Pangea Legal Services in November 2019 to work with immigrants in California with disabilities.
Prior to law school, Roxana worked for four years in President Obama’s White House as a Policy Advisor at the National Economic Council, where she focused on community college and job training policies aimed at increasing pathways to well-paying jobs. Aside from law and policy, Roxana is also interested in storytelling and documentary work.
