Visit Old City Hall, the Hancock Cemetery and the United First Parish Church

Quincy, MA– The City of Quincy is offering The Heart of Quincy Tour, a free, historical walking tour of its most notable landmarks as part of a city-funded program in partnership with The Church of the Presidents’ already existing visitation program. The 45-minute long guided tours are led by re-enactors playing famous local historical figures like John Hancock and were scripted by the Quincy Historical Society. The tours begin in the lobby of the newly refurbished Old City Hall, proceeding to the Hancock Cemetery from where the group is seamlessly handed off to the Church of the Presidents’ visitation program for their last stop.

· Old Quincy City Hall is one of the oldest functioning City Halls in the country. It was built in 1844 from Quincy Granite and was designed by the same architect who designed the Bunker Hill monument. It was just fully restored and is now 100% public space.

· The Hancock Cemetery (named for John Hancock’s father) is the oldest piece of the original settlement in Quincy and sixty-nine veterans of the American Revolution are buried in this 376-year-old Cemetery.

· The United First Parish Church (also called the Church of Presidents) is located directly across Hancock Street; the church is the final resting place of President John Adams and first lady Abigail Adams as well as President John Quincy Adams and first lady Louisa Adams.

Upon its launch, an average of 3 to 5 tours have been run per day, with tourists from at least a dozen countries as well as Quincy residents and visitors from surrounding towns enjoying the historic journey. The city is working on incorporating the Quincy Public School system for student tours, with the overall goal to focus some attention on the heart of Quincy and the future Hancock Adams Green, for which construction has already started.

The Heart of Quincy Tour showcases the city’s rich history as part of the revitalization of downtown Quincy Center. The tours are offered on a walk-in basis, Monday through Friday from 10:00am to 4:00pm.
