Join the Friends of the Boston Harborwalk for a discussion of the historic disaster that befell in Boston's North End in winter of 1919.
About this event
*PLEASE NOTE:* Due to snow, this event has been postponed until Saturday March 5, 2022 from its original date (Saturday February 26)
The Great Molasses Flood of 1919 shattered Boston's North End neighborhood on an unseasonably warm winter afternoon in January, 1919. After a brief overview of other disasters that have befallen Boston over the years, the discussion will focus on how and why the molasses tank came to be installed in one of Boston's most densely populated neighborhoods - and how poor design and construction oversight led to its eventual failure.
All participants must register in advance. The tour has a $10 charge.
The Friends of the Boston Harborwalk is a volunteer group affiliated with Boston Harbor Now. The group meets monthly to promote awareness, public enjoyment and local stewardship of Boston’s 43-mile Harborwalk. For more information on joining the group, please contact Mike Manning, Chair, at [email protected].
