When teaching a classroom of individuals who have special needs, the educational program differs from that of your typical classroom. There are many goals that are catered to the needs of people enrolled in special education and they are intricately designed to help these individuals move forward in society with as little difficulty as possible. Below are a few of these goals by easywaypaper outlined in order to understand the goals of special education and why they are existent.

Learning Environment
The main idea here is to provide individuals with any sort of disability the ability to learn in a regular classroom setting whenever possible. Special education programs have a goal to minimize the focus of the disability within the student. By doing so, students have the opportunity to learn in an environment that accelerates their potential without the need to be held back constantly simply because of their disability.

Individual Education Plans
Individual education plans are catered personally to each special need student in order to personalize the format of their learning so they can move at the pace that works best for them. In the process of creating an appropriate IEP, each student is evaluated and reviewed personally on a regular basis. The school and the students family are both involved in constructing the goals involved in the IEPs, and as much as possible the students themselves are invited to join in the development of their goals as well.

Continuum of Services
The goal of continuum of services is to incorporate physical education, art and music classes as much as possible in order to provide special education with the least restrictive learning environment as possible. In order to provide a successful learning environment, students are encourage to create their school day in the way that best works for them with help from their teachers, often times adding less restrictive classes to their schedule to break up their day.

Autonomy
Possibly the most important goal for students in special education is to provide them with any sense of autonomy that is possible in the provided setting. Autonomy in the special education setting is set up to help students recognize their own personal strengths and talents in order to develop their unique skills. This goal is extremely important in that it sets up students for the world outside of the classroom, granting them with the autonomy they will need in order to do so successfully.

The goals of special education program are extremely important for each student enrolled in special education classes as they are ultimately the foundational building blocks for the lives that lie ahead of them. The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act has helped with the progression of each of the goals laid out above and because of that there has been much progress in the success of these individuals. At the rate things are going, the goals set up will improve and further produce greater results in society for individuals with special needs.
