An opportunity for community learning and dialogue, The Impact on Artists & Audiences as part of The Butterfly Process by Boston Lyric Opera centers the experience of opera artists and explores the complex, sometimes conflicting relationship many have to Madama Butterfly, both as a gateway to opera and a work that has typecast many AAPI singers. Artists will explore ways in which opera productions can be more inclusive and multicultural. Phil Chan will lead the conversation with Featured Speakers to contextualize these themes and frame a community discussion.
Due to the resurgence of COVID-19, this program is now online only.
Patrons are invited to participate as a Community Guest, to watch, listen, and hold space for this important discussion to take place. Community Guests are encouraged to reflect on the issues brought up in BLO’s The Butterfly Process and examine how these conversations can impact their own industry and lived experience. To participate over Zoom webinar, please register at the following link: https://boston-public-library.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN__H0WFrKsQsmtH-N6tW1PXw.
The Impact on Artists & Audiences is presented in partnership by Boston Lyric Opera and Boston Public Library. The Butterfly Process by BLO is a series of discussions along with online resources and a public performance. This work developed organically and iteratively since it took shape in early 2021 and is part of BLO’s commitment to inclusive storytelling with its artists and for its audiences. BLO engages with community leaders, organizations, and preeminent scholars, both in Boston and beyond, whose work relates to this process. For more information about The Butterfly Process, including future and past discussions, you can visit Boston Lyric Opera online at http://blo.org/butterfly-process.
