MFA Film is thrilled to present a vibrant showcase of the very best recent films produced in Japan. Don’t miss Hirokazu Kore-eda’s poignant family drama Shoplifters, winner of the top prize at the 2018 Cannes Film Festival; and Masaaki Yuasa’s animated adventure The Night Is Short, Walk On Girl, about a college student whose fondness for fancy cocktails and rare books leads to a string of increasingly bizarre encounters. The festival opens with a free screening of Mari Okada’s breathtaking anime Maquia: When the Promised Flower Blooms, about an immortal girl who has the power to weave her thoughts and emotions into fabric. This annual celebration of Japanese filmmaking is made possible through a 10-year partnership with UNIQLO USA.
