The three bandhas - Moola, Uddiyana, and Jalandhara - are often invoked as having myriad benefits when practiced with correct method. But how are we to correctly employ them and what role do they serve in the ashtanga practice? We will explore the bandhas at the level of the physical body in terms of the role they play in structuring the practice and the body itself. Then we will move on to considering the function they serve in terms of their relationship to the breathing, the mind, and the internal aspects of the practice. Each of the bandhas will be introduced individually and discussed in terms of its relationship to the broader practice.
