Creative Learning in Classrooms.

A workshop for K-5 educators hosted by the Creative Learning Company and Acera, the Massachusetts School of Science, Creativity and Leadership.

What is a maker culture, and how can you bring it into your classroom? How can you use hands-on activities to teach problem solving and tech skills while sparking student curiosity and creativity? Are there affordable ways to do this? How can you build a bridge between creative making and the curriculum you need to cover?

Join us for this half-day workshop during April vacation week to tinker, build, explore and create a vision for how you and your students can learn almost anything. Immerse yourself in the kind of creative learning experience you’d like to teach – hack a toy, make a cardboard creation, program and print edible cookie decorations. Explore approaches underlying this way of learning, from Design Thinking to Constructionism. Create a roadmap for how you will take making to your classroom.

At Acera and the Creative Learning Company, we believe that making is not about tools and spaces but about how you engage with them. We believe that teachers are curators of creativity in their classrooms – you don’t just teach the tools but also help children develop a vision for their work, and themselves. Creativity, in our view, is an attitude; a way in which people, no matter what age, interact with the world.

In this workshop, you will learn how to use low-cost, low-threshold, everyday materials for creative exploration, and leave equipped to start making in your classroom. You will meet colleagues eager to try the same, and we’ll facilitate an online exchange a few weeks later for participants to share their post-workshop experiences tinkering with students.

The price for this workshop is $30 for materials. Open to teachers from public, charter or private schools. Participants will receive a certificate of completion. Light snacks and drinks will be served. Participants’ children can attend Acera’s April vacation program on Tuesday, April 18, at a 30% discount.
