South Street Gallery, South Shore’s premier fine art gallery supporting area artists, invites the public to stop by on Sunday, April 9 from 1 to 4pm for the monthly “Sunday Open House” offering light refreshments and a friendly atmosphere. This month’s Gallery Artist is the Gallery owner, Jack C. Hobbs FAIA. He is one of The Twelve Gallery Artists who will be featured throughout the year. Every month, one of the Twelve Artists displays a grouping of new works on The Gallery Artists Wall.

Hobbs went on a unique trip recently and here’s what he says about his newest paintings from that trip:
“My son Daniel got a job as a river guide on the Rio Grande. We co-piloted a four day cross country trip. Our destination was Terlingua, Texas located at the entrance to Big Bend National Park, one of the most remote of all the National Parks in the lower forty eight. I spent every day, all day, standing in the dessert at the foot of the Chisos Mountains attempting to capture the ever changing values and chroma. These studies are the evidence of that wonderful trip with my son.
Daniel has just started a job on the Salmon River in Salmon, Idaho.”

Growing up in the Ohio River Valley, Hobbs developed a sensitivity toward the landscape of the surrounding farmlands. These landscape impressions have remained with him and have become the primary influence and focus of his work. Receiving a degree in architecture from the University of Notre Dame’s Beaux Arts based design program, his architectural design curricula was augmented with a focus in the fine arts. This and a year living abroad and studying in Rome Italy, provided a foundation for his obsession with the fine art of painting.
As he developed a successful Real Estate Project Management company, he continued to paint on weekends, holidays and vacations, catching a few hours early in the morning and late in the evening around family activities. The business was purchased in 2014 which has allowed him to pursue painting full time.
Key in the development of his painting skills and methodology, particularly plain air work, he owes a great deal to those painters who have been his mentors; especially Charles Movalli, Charles Sovek, Carolyn Anderson, Skip Whitcomb, and Ned Jacob. Each of these artist has a long tradition with outdoor painting and a direct connection to some of the great painters of our time. He is honored by that connection.
