A colorful, multicultural tradition that has been a part of the Chinese culture for centuries, the Dragon Boat Festival honors the life and death of the famous Chinese scholar Qu Yuan (Chu Yuan) and occurs on the fifth day of the fifth month of the lunar calendar. Boston’s only Hunan restaurant, Sumiao Hunan Kitchen, will be bringing the beloved tradition to Kendall Square this year by uniting the celebrations with Father’s Day on June 17 for those looking to give Dad an unexpected – and delicious – cultural experience. The Dragon Boat Festival falls on June 18 this year.
Sticky Rice Dumplings, known as zongzi, is the most iconic Dragon Boat Festival dish and SHK will be serving up the bamboo leaf-wrapped treats for the first time ($2 each) in honor of the holiday. (SHK Expert tip: these dumplings are most enjoyed when dipped in sugar cane or wasabi mayo sauce.) On this day, with the purchase of any menu item, guests will receive a complimentary appetizer portion of SHK’s BBQ Rib Festival Ribs, a flavor-packed crowd favorite from last year’s Cambridge Ribfest, featuring green and red peppers and dried chili. Pork-filled Steamed Pork Bao ($10 per order of 4) with five spice dipping sauce complete the traditional experience.
