Dissident is a devised piece by Allston-based theater company, Strange News. It is inspired by Vaclav Havel's Vanek plays.
Written in the wake of Havel's release from prison in Soviet Chekoslovakia, the Vanek plays are autobiographical satires. They explore, through the character Vanek's interaction with friends and colleagues, the extent to which living in an absurd system drives people to act absurdly.
Since Havel wrote the plays, numerous playwrights have written their own Vanek plays, and our project both joins in and comments on that tradition.
