ABOUT I, ROCK
Told from the perspective of a proud four-billion-year-old rock, this charmingly funny and thoroughly informative nonfiction picture book is perfect for young geologists.
Rock tells his sensational, sometimes harrowing, sometimes hilarious, geological tale to a group of eager students. From his humble beginnings beneath Earth’s crust, to a volcano blast that propelled him onto land, to the storms and earthquakes and dinosaur encounters and deep-sea adventures that finally bring him to the bottom of a student’s shoe, come discover what makes Rock rock!
Detailed informational sidebars and extensive backmatter are the cherry on top of this illuminating and accessible crash course in geology.
PRAISE FOR I, ROCK
A rock . . . pipes up to retrace its own four-billion-year history. That the same rock can change repeatedly from one type to another may be the main lesson readers will absorb. . . though the note of self-affirmation toward the end (“I’m proud to say that I’m here, I’m me, and…I ROCK!”) will never go amiss.

A stone-focused read that strikes a rich vein of fun.

ABOUT THE SPEAKERS
As a kid, Katie Slivensky picked up rocks everywhere she went, kept the most interesting ones in a box under her bed, filled her bookshelf with stories about fossils, and shared facts about geology and prehistory with anyone who would listen. Actually, she does all these things as an adult, too! A professional science educator and children’s author, Katie has two middle grade novels published, The Countdown Conspiracy and The Seismic Seven, as well as natural-history-based picture books, This Wolf Was Different and now, I, Rock. Katie's love of learning has resulted in a lifetime of adventures, including helping separate fighting rhinos, falling down a cliff in search of fossils, flying an astronaut through the solar system (the astronaut was real, the solar system was a simulation), raising a stranded baby mouse, creating million-volt lightning bolts, and handling feisty alligators. She lives just outside of Boston with her family and dear little cat, Darwin.
Steph Stilwell is a New York Times bestselling illustrator and master of puns based in Brooklyn, NY. While it has been a couple of decades since she kept a rock collection, she is still the proud owner of a hand-painted pet rock. Steph loves humor, bright color palettes, and is most often drawing food (but now sometimes rocks, too!) Since graduating with her BFA in illustration from MICA, Steph has worked on over a dozen children's books and created work for clients like American Greetings, Snapchat, Trader Joe's, and more! You can find her work online at stephstilwell.com.
