Stitched into Memory is a free public art exhibition celebrating the contemporary African Diaspora communities of Boston, featuring textiles created in the West African traditions, designed and taught by artist and educator Stephen Hamilton, in collaboration with nine Boston teenagers.
Stitched into Memory will be on view from 7/29-9/9/17 from 7am to 10pm at Waterfront Square at Atlantic Wharf, located at 290 Congress Street in South Boston. Free, public opening night reception Saturday, July 29 from 2pm-5pm.
To create Stitched into Memory, Hamilton spent four months teaching Boston youth traditional West African textile dying, weaving and embellishing processes that he learned while visiting Nigeria to study art and culture. The finished product is a 30' by 9' textile mural that celebrates the contemporary African Diaspora communities of Boston and features textiles created in West African traditions.
