Somerville Songwriter Sessions at the Armory Cafe presents contemporary folk singer/songwriters in concert, on the first Saturday of each month. The Armory Cafe features live music in an intimate setting, a menu featuring sandwiches, soups, desserts and coffees, and plenty of free parking. Our 1/5 performers:

Boston-based Stephanie Corby possesses a rich, powerful voice that transcends the borders of musical style. This soulful songstress has successfully fused her classical, jazz and blues backgrounds into a distinct R&B-flavored acoustic sound. After studying classical and jazz vocal technique in high school and college, she joined the nine-piece R&B Biggs Band in 1990 and built a deep repertoire of blues and R&B classics. In the mid-90s Corby left the band and entered Boston's singer/songwriter circuit as a solo artist and has been touring the US and Canada for the past 20 years. Songwriter Ellis Paul says "Stephanie has the kind of voice that can make the waters part: loud, sweet, and soulful. She could have saved Moses a lot of trouble."  More at www.stephaniecorby.com.

Americana/Folk singer-songwriter Ruth Hill has roots that run deep in these New England hills. Ruth grew up in New Hampshire, the third of ten children, and started singing with her older brother and sister at church and community events when she was just six years old. Ruth accompanies herself expressively on guitar, banjo and mandolin but when she opens her heart and sings, from a place of depth and compassion, you'll want to lean in closer. Ruth was recently named Grand Prize Winner of the 2017 Great American Song Contest. She also won first prize at the Maine Songwriter's Association song contest in 2016. Ruth's 2nd CD, Reunion of Broken Parts, was released in the fall of 2017 and was on the Folk DJ charts for January, February and March of 2018. Ruth's first CD, The River Beneath Me , was released in June of 2011 and was nationally ranked in Folk DJ Top Folk Albums, Songs and Artists of 2011. Although Ruth started singing and playing music early in life, it took her until she was nearly a half century old before she finally found her songwriting voice and began performing and writing full time. "I don't regret becoming a fulltime musician so late in my life," Ruth says, "I've had a wonderful life full of rich adventures. But, I am thrilled to be here now! My recent successes have shown me that it's never too late to learn to believe in yourself!" More at ruthhillmusic.com.

Beth DeSombre writes songs that are "smart and uplifting...focusing on the quiet meaning to be found in ordinary life" (Sing Out!), exploring issues from the personal to the political. Her music touches both mind and heart, with insights wrapped in melody and harmony that stay with you after the echoes of the last chorus have faded away. Her 2017 EP Resistance reached #10 on the folk charts (with two top-10 songs). This EP, written in response to the current political situation, is a fundraiser for the ACLU. Her 2016 CD, I Was Here, was produced by Sean Staples, and includes guest appearances by Tracy Grammer, Vance Gilbert, Laura Cortese, and other music luminaries. Her songs have been honored in national and international songwriting contests, and she has appeared across New England and beyond. An award-winning writer in many formats, she's just completed her eighth book, published by Oxford University Press. More at www.bethdesombre.com.
