Join us this Saturday September 6 from 4-6 pm for a conversation with Jeffrey Heyne and Ted Ollier, two of the featured artists in our current exhibition Space Odyssey. Both Heyne and Ollier were natural choices to include in Space Odyssey, as they both have been working on long-running projects concerning space and our desire to traverse and comprehend the cosmos.
Jeffrey Heyne's series What Was Yours Is Now Mine, explores the stories of land ownership based on the collision of mining on sacred/public/protected lands here on Earth, and by analogous extension, up into the Heavens. Taking inspiration from Antoine de Saint-Exupery’s children's novella, The Little Prince, Heyne pairs and collages his photos of mining areas with photos from NASA’s mission to Asteroid Bennu, and the European Space Agency’s mission to Comet 67P.
Printmaker Ted Ollier renders astronomical data such as orbital paths, maps and planetary sizes into striking and graphic prints that help to visualize the grandeur of the universe in ways we can easily understand. Sun Jupiter Neptune Earth Moon, letterpress on paper, edition of 27 represents the relative size of planets in our solar system, to scale. His other piece in Space Odyssey, Titan Northern Polar Lakes, letterpress on paper, edition of 27, beautifully represents the compelling abstract shapes of the lakes on one of Saturn's moons.
The event begins at 4 pm with a reception and refreshments, and the talk will begin at 4:30 pm.
