This September 12-15, hundreds of street style dancers and spectators from around the world will descend on Boston for the 3rd annual Stackin’ Stylez Freestyle Festival, a 4-day celebration of urban dance culture, technique, artistry & community
The event has garnered international recognition for its deep community building and emphasis on artistic growth, elements which are prominently born out of its unique concept-based battle structure. In traditional freestyle dance battles, participants are judged by their performance in a streetstyle of their choice, a format that often fails to push participants out of their comfort zones. In contrast, Stackin’ Stylez encourages dancers to compete through a creative lens by assigning “concepts” for each round and judging based on their exploration of these themes. Example concepts include: musicality, fixed points, footwork, storytelling, and sacred geometry.
Highlights of the weekend include the “OG Panel” on Friday, September 13 at 6:00 PM at Stiggity East Studio, where Boston’s original hip hop dancers share their history and the Funkshun, a Future Soul, Modern Funk & Nu-Rnb pre-party on September 13 at 10pm. Doors open for the main dance battle event at 4pm on September 14th. The Festival will also host dance workshops at Stiggity East studio on September 15th.
At its core, Stackin’ Stylez is a celebration of culture and connection, and all members of the broader Boston community are encouraged to attend the battle and join the family. The main dance battle is a one-of-a-kind exposure to the heart of freestyle dance culture and the infectious and transformative energy of this artform.
