Join us for a staged reading of a new play, "More than Need," at the Democracy Center in Harvard Square.
Mary Hamilton runs away from home in her brother’s clothes in 18th century England in order to train as a doctor. She marries another woman, but they’re caught, and Mary is arrested for fraud. Inspired by trial records from 1746 and the sensationalized account of her adventures marrying fourteen different women, “More Than Need” attempts to give Mary agency in telling her own story, and allow her a chance at a happy ending that would have been impossible in the 18th century literary imagination.
Running time: One hour and 30 minutes, with no intermission.
Tickets: Suggested $10
