Women have been composing operas for hundreds of years. Did you know that?
Although dialogue around gender and opera is becoming increasingly prominent, female-composed operas are rarely performed. In fact there are hundreds of exceptional operas that continue to be excluded from standard repertoire. Charlotte McKechnie created Soir des Femmes to address this imbalance. Our April program takes the audience on an epic journey through scenes from five operas and two hundred years. From the trysts – and tantrums – of teenage love (Le Marriage d’Antonio) to the fairytale of Cinderella (Cendrillon) and the prison cell of Joan of Arc (Jeanne), audiences will discover old stories made new by energetic, comic, and introspective music, sung by Boston’s finest professional singers.
