Critically acclaimed dance theater company, Navarasa Dance Theater, comes to Wellesley College for a series of lectures and the East Coast premiere of Snake and Ladder, a multimedia performance incorporating classical, folk and contemporary Indian dance vocabularies, aerial dance, and Indian martial arts. Inspired by Ingmar Bergman’s film The Seventh Seal, this moving meditation on death, war, hope, and redemption features a cast of fifteen talented performers, coming together from across the country.

Navarasa Dance Theater’s innovative classical and contemporary work roots itself in Indian performing arts yet reaches out to audiences around the world. In their newest production, created in India, Los Angeles and Albuquerque, a prince suffering from PTSD confronts Death and challenges her to a game of Snakes and Ladders, while an artist uses his art to evade Death. With a cinematic original score, narrative and movement enacted on stage and three original aerial apparatus against a backdrop of stunning contemporary images, Snake and Ladder reveals the transcendent power of art to bring healing.

From September 18-22, Dr. Aparna Sindhoor, Artistic Director of SINDHOOR/NATYAVEDA – Navarasa Dance Theater, will be a guest lecturer in the departments of Sociology, Women andGender Studies and Art History at Wellesley College. Dr. Sindhoor will present a free public lecture on Thursday, September 21 at 2:50 p.m. entitled “Navarasa: A New Dance Theater for the Diaspora and Beyond” at Wellesley College’s Suzy Newhouse Center for the Humanities. Sindhoor will explore the challenges and responsibilities of creating dance theater works on multiple continents, focusing on her artistic process and sharing past works. On Friday, September 22, Wellesley students will participate in a movement workshop with Anil Natyaveda, choreographer and expert in the South Indian martial art Kalari ppayattu.
